What is one of the great ways to finish off any room?
Window treatments. When it comes to windows, most of my clients choose
treatments based on function over form. But window dressings can also
accentuate a room view, add an unexpected design element, provide warmth to a
space or it can become a room's focal point. So
I recently had coffee (my preferred drink) with Debbie from Divine window Décor and I asked
her what are the two most popular options for window treatment, and this is
what she had to say...

The
two most popular window covering selections are the 2
½” fauxwood blind and the
energy efficient honeycomb shade.
Fauxwood
blinds come in a range of colors from bright white to espresso. White and off
white are the most chosen mainly due to the trend in window trims is white and
clients want to match that color. Another good reason is that the 2 ½” slats
provide a larger view through between the slats letting in more light for our
cloudy Portland days. They are easy to clean especially when you have the “no
holes” option which eliminates the slotted holes in each slat keeping a cleaner
line, tighter closure and no interior cords.
*These blinds can be cleaned via an
ultrasonic process which is as easy as a phone call to a blind cleaning
service.

Cord
tilts are more durable than wand tilts and are easier to operate especially for
people with arthritis or weakness in their hands. Tilting the slats gives you
light and privacy control. These blinds can be heavy to raise on large windows
so tilting, not raising daily, is recommended for greater life of the blind. Price
point is attractive as well as they are very affordable. If you have really
large windows and wish to lift blinds every day, a real wood blind is a better
option.

Honeycomb
shades are great for energy efficiency as the pocketed structure captures the
air to create insulation from heat and cold. They can be light filtering or
room darkening. One of the most popular features is top down/bottom up lifts.
There are several different lift options, like cordless, that make these even
better. I especially recommend the top down/bottom up in bedrooms as when you
would like to let some light or outdoor view in, if you lower the blind from
the top you still maintain all the privacy you need in the lower part of the
window.

There
are hundreds of colors and fabrics to choose from to create your personalized
look. These shades are white on the back to reflect the sun and give you street
side continuity which is sometimes required by CC&R’s. This allows you to
mix and match interior colors, fabrics and opacities while still getting the
same exterior appearance. A small stack and lightweight lifting when
compressing the shade is another great feature, especially for large windows.

There
are many other types of window coverings with various lift systems all with
their own claim to fame. Dressing up any window with a valance or drapes or
just a stationary drapery panel is always a great way to personalize and add
color and pattern. Often, it is best to get the blinds or shades installed when
moving into your new home then do the fabric options later once you have picked
out your furniture and accent rugs and other pieces so that things complement
one another.
