GET ORGANIZED!

©Elle M Photography

How often we look in our closets and feel overwhelmed because they are so disorganized? Today I asked Professional Organizer, Joelle Mayo, for tips on decluttering and organizing one of the most important areas of your room--your closet!

Joelle at Organize Portland helps clients organize closets and all other areas of your home and office. She can be reached at organize.portland@gmail.com or 971-266-0517. Mention this blog and receive 20% off services booked through Dec. 31, 2016. www.organize.portland.com

It's time to make room for fall boots, cozy sweaters and warm scarves. So take inventory and make your closet a pleasure rather than a chore.

EMPTY AND CLEAN
The first step is to empty and clean the space. Empty all the contents and put them on the bed in categories, with separate piles for cardigans, short sleeve, long sleeve, dresses, etc.

PURGE
Get rid of anything faded, damaged, stained, ill-fitting, out of style, etc.
For everything left, ask yourself:
1. Will I wear this again?
2. Am I keeping it because of the money I spent, even though I won't wear it.
If yes, donate.
3. Does this garment make me feel good? If you haven't worn it in a while, try it on.

ORGANIZE
Put things together by color using very slim, velvet lined hangars available at many stores or on Amazon. They not only save space but prevent slipping. As an alternative, you can use plastic hangers in one color. As you hang items back up in your closet, organize them by color and type.

ACCESSORIZE
To dress up your closet, if you have the space, add pictures, jewelry storage and accents. They can transform the ordinary room into a visually inviting space. (Dulce has so many wonderful design ideas).

Quarry Lake kitchen reveal

Hello again! My message to you this month centers on a goal – to update a kitchen without changing its bones, the kitchen cabinets or countertops. We were up to the challenge! As you know, what an interior designer does is reveal concepts that might not be obvious but make such a big difference. The short version is that we relocated the TV into the living room so this family of four and a lovely dog could hang out there more often …since the space was not used much. (I will share the new living room space with you in the future. In this message, it’s about the kitchen). ©Elle M Photography ©Elle M Photography Moving the TV created a gathering space that was inviting and cozy and closer to the kitchen/island area. Everyone likes to be near the food! Paint is a wonderful way to create change.  The kitchen cabinets set the tone and, fortunately, this family is not afraid of bringing color into their home.
