October tips on how to get ahead for the holidays so you can relax and have fun!

A picture is worth a 1000 words

...especially if the photographer is Shelly of Elle M. Photography. (She is the photographer for the Du interiors website).

Family pictures taken by a professional make all the difference in the world and everyone should have a Family Picture Day.

This summer we did just that, another item off my bucket list. Of course we wanted Shelly to be our photographer  and on a marvelous summer day she brought her camera and did her thing. We have selected one of her many beautiful photos to be on our holiday cards.

My goal for you and me is to get organized so we can enjoy the holiday season without stress that, too often, happens this time of the year. In that spirit, I have asked Joelle Mayo of Organize Portland to share her organizing tips for the month with Du interiors. Here is what she has to say:

  • If you like to send holiday cards with a family photo, schedule a photographer this month. I highly recommend building your card online so that it is ready to submit once the 40-50% off sales start arriving in November. And here's  a tip to lessen holiday frustration! Update your address book well ahead of putting things in the mail or sending online. Your friends and family will wonder why you are so relaxed instead of frenzied!

    • Free up your time and money as the holidays roll around by beginning to buy or make your gifts now, especially those for teachers, fellow workers and your gift cards.

    • Fall is also the ideal time to organize your basement/attic/garage so you won't be digging to find that holiday decor stuff you put away. When winter arrives, you will be ready to greet the season with joy and excitement.

Please don't forget to check our GET ORGANIZE! blog.
It talks about revamping, decluttering, and beautifying your closet to get ready for the holiday season.

And if you are good at organizing at your home, share you tips with us!

    Happy October!

    Quarry Lake kitchen reveal

Hello again! My message to you this month centers on a goal – to update a kitchen without changing its bones, the kitchen cabinets or countertops. We were up to the challenge! As you know, what an interior designer does is reveal concepts that might not be obvious but make such a big difference. The short version is that we relocated the TV into the living room so this family of four and a lovely dog could hang out there more often …since the space was not used much. (I will share the new living room space with you in the future. In this message, it’s about the kitchen). ©Elle M Photography ©Elle M Photography Moving the TV created a gathering space that was inviting and cozy and closer to the kitchen/island area. Everyone likes to be near the food! Paint is a wonderful way to create change.  The kitchen cabinets set the tone and, fortunately, this family is not afraid of bringing color into their home. The SW 9134 Delft gloss paint is t...

Useful ideas on choosing a bookcase

Du interiors  Bookcases can be classical, fanciful, functional and personal …they really add to the anatomy of a room. They display your favorite reads as well as framed memories. There are so many options on deciding on the best for your nest. Here are important considerations. What Size Should Your Bookcase Be? The most basic consideration is size. How much space do you have in the room you have in mind? If space is ample, wide bookcases that measure several feet across are a good design idea. However, if room is small, go up! Taller bookcases work in space limitations, if you plan on placing a lot on them. Otherwise, one or more small bookcases would work.  Measure the room before you shop. What Type of Bookcase Do You Want? If you need inspiration, we suggest checking out houzz.com , Pinterest, Instagram, and so forth. There are so many choices on the market. What is Your Budget? Prices range from several hundred dollars to thousands if you want a custom built-...
