FALL is the season for warm exotic teas or our favorite coffee, windblown hair and chunky sweaters.

In Oregon we have a lovely, colorful fall but we do not give up on summer easily.

FALL starts off with a feeling of optimism with the dazzling colors of changing leaves and a touch of chill in the air. It’s also a season of change as we prepare ourselves for the holidays. It’s time for candlelight and lighted fireplaces and coming home to a warm, welcoming nest.

It’s time to pay closer attention to what styles, colors and textures attract your attention.
When you know what you like, it is easier to make the choices that result in a home that feels like you and your family. Choosing things for your home is more difficult than you think. It’s like being in a dressing room at a store trying to decide on a bathing suit!  What I recommend is avoiding impulse decisions because taking more time to make choices results in saving money and enjoying what you choose for the long haul. It’s best to avoid trends when they don’t speak to you for more than a brief mood. Avoid buyer’s remorse.

How do you make better choices? Be pro-active.
Start a Houzz idea book or a board on Pinterest on your computer or smartphone.
Save images you readily connect with. Add brief descriptions of what appeals to you in each image, so that you recall what you were thinking. This should include color, the shape of a chair, window treatments and so forth. You can also snip pictures from magazines and make a mood board or tape them in a notebook.

After you have made choices, downsize “stuff” or change images that no longer resonate with you when you look at them again.
Eliminating some of the images that don’t hold up is as important as collecting them in the first place. Perhaps you are tired of the wall color in your home, or a chair that doesn’t seem to fit in any more, or a box of keepsakes you haven’t looked at for five years. This is the season to make a decision to say goodbye to what’s not being used.

Walk your inner talk!
Travel through your home with a notepad and start the list of what you don’t want. After you have compiled a list, take a “time out” and enjoy a cup of tea or glass of wine and review it. Make and commit to a plan for letting go.
It feels good to get that elephant off your back!
Then you can focus on creating a happy season in your home.

Happy FALL!

Quarry Lake kitchen reveal

Hello again! My message to you this month centers on a goal – to update a kitchen without changing its bones, the kitchen cabinets or countertops. We were up to the challenge! As you know, what an interior designer does is reveal concepts that might not be obvious but make such a big difference. The short version is that we relocated the TV into the living room so this family of four and a lovely dog could hang out there more often …since the space was not used much. (I will share the new living room space with you in the future. In this message, it’s about the kitchen). ©Elle M Photography ©Elle M Photography Moving the TV created a gathering space that was inviting and cozy and closer to the kitchen/island area. Everyone likes to be near the food! Paint is a wonderful way to create change.  The kitchen cabinets set the tone and, fortunately, this family is not afraid of bringing color into their home. Useful ideas on choosing a bookcase

Du interiors  Bookcases can be classical, fanciful, functional and personal …they really add to the anatomy of a room. They display your favorite reads as well as framed memories. There are so many options on deciding on the best for your nest. Here are important considerations. What Size Should Your Bookcase Be? The most basic consideration is size. How much space do you have in the room you have in mind? If space is ample, wide bookcases that measure several feet across are a good design idea. However, if room is small, go up! Taller bookcases work in space limitations, if you plan on placing a lot on them. Otherwise, one or more small bookcases would work.  Measure the room before you shop. What Type of Bookcase Do You Want? If you need inspiration, we suggest checking out houzz.com , Pinterest, Instagram, and so forth. There are so many choices on the market. What is Your Budget? Prices range from several hundred dollars to thousands if you want a custom built-...
