For those of you who like statement
items in your home, oversized rugs (12x15 and larger) are your best bet. They
unify a room and add to its coziness as well as being a focal point or even a
conversation piece.
A room without a rug can feel
unfinished. Smaller area rugs are what I call placemats for the floor, such as
those just-larger-than-coffee table-size.
Are we missing out by thinking small?
Little rugs make a room feel choppy.
Larger rugs unify a room and heighten the impact.

Many of my clients choose not to hide
their lovely wood floors. Large rugs let floorboards shine. They have another
benefit; they protect the room from floorboard drafts during the winter. They
add drama.
Area rugs anchor dead spaces like entry
ways and hallways. Here’s a tip: In high traffic areas like entrance halls,
rugs should be secured with nonslip rug pads. Pads help rugs remain neat
without folds.

If your wall-to-wall carpet stains
easily and no longer serves your purpose when children come along, keep the
carpet and its space-enhancing neutral benefit by teaming it with a larger
floor covering in a more forgiving neutral shade or pattern.
Second rugs bring a cozy, bohemian feel
to space. The top rug is less likely to move because the lower rug keeps it in
place.
In choosing rugs for the dining room be
sure they are large enough for when chairs are moved. You want them to remain
on the rug. They protect wood floors from scratches.

Extra-large rugs are ideal for breaking up a large open plan room. For rooms that are combined living, dining and cooking areas, a rug can define each area. Large rugs are used to create intimate zones.
Here, one rug on the center of the space defines three distinct areas (seating on left, meetings in the center and desk areas on the right) that create an impressive look but feel less imposing.

Cannot choose between a carpet or wood floor? You can have both with an oversize rug that feels warm and soft in the morning but doesn’t hide the natural beauty of wood. Another benefit is soundproofing. Rugs absorb sound in high impact areas…think the pitter patter of feet and heels!
And YES! you can have an area rug over a wall to wall carpet!
